Botox in Tokyo as a Visitor: Timing, Aftercare and Flying

Botox in Tokyo: timing it around your trip, aftercare and flying

The short version

  • Book it early in your trip, not the day before you fly. Not because flying is dangerous, but because you want to be reachable if anything needs looking at.
  • Nothing dramatic happens on the day. A few minutes of injections, small marks that settle within an hour or two.
  • You will not see the result on this trip. Facial lines take days; the jaw takes weeks to months. Plan expectations accordingly.
  • The aftercare that matters is short: no rubbing, no onsen, no hard exercise, no alcohol on the day.

Botox is one of the easiest treatments to fit into a trip to Tokyo, and one of the easiest to time badly. This page is about the timing questions — when in your trip to book it, what the rest of that day looks like, and whether you can fly. For prices and treatment areas, see Botox in Tokyo.

When in your trip to book it

Early. Ideally in the first half.

The reason is not that flying afterwards is risky — it is not. It is that if you have a question, you want to still be in the same country as the clinic that treated you. Bruising that you would like looked at, or a query about how something is settling, is a five-minute conversation while you are here and an awkward one from another time zone.

There is also a scheduling reason. Facial Botox has a small window where it is doing nothing yet — the first two to three days — and if you have an event on this trip, being past that window is better than being inside it.

What the day itself looks like

  1. Consultation. What you want changed, your medical history, and whether Botox is the right tool for it. Sometimes it is not, and we would rather say so.
  2. The injections themselves take a few minutes. Fine needles. Most people describe it as a series of quick stings rather than pain.
  3. Afterwards: small raised marks where the injections went, sometimes slight redness. These usually settle within an hour or two. Bruising is possible, particularly around the eyes.
  4. You can go back out and carry on with your day. There is no bandage and nothing to hide, which is why this fits a trip so easily.

If you bruise easily or are photographing something important in the next few days, say so at the consultation and we can plan around it.

Aftercare, and what it is actually for

These restrictions are short and they matter for a specific reason: in the first hours the product should stay where it was placed. Heat, pressure and raised blood flow are what move it.

For how longAvoid
First 4–6 hoursRubbing, massaging or pressing the treated area. Lying face-down.
Rest of the dayOnsen, sento, sauna and long hot baths. Hard exercise. Alcohol.
Rest of the dayFacials, face massage, and anything that presses on the area.
Next 24 hoursTake it gently. A normal day is fine; a gym session and a hot spring are not.

The onsen point is the one that catches visitors out, because a hot spring is often the next thing on the itinerary. If your trip has an onsen day, book the Botox for a different day — it is easier than skipping the onsen.

Can you fly afterwards?

Yes. Cabin pressure does not move Botox around, and there is no rule requiring you to wait before flying.

The sensible version of the advice is smaller than the internet suggests: leave a few hours between the appointment and the flight if you can, mostly so you are not rubbing your face while wrestling luggage in the first hour. Book it earlier in the trip for the reason above — access to the clinic, not aviation.

When you will actually see it — and why the jaw is different

Botox timing for visitors: facial lines begin softening in two to three days and settle at around two weeks, while masseter jaw slimming takes several weeks to a few months to become visible

Facial lines — forehead, frown lines, crow’s feet. Movement begins to soften at two to three days, and the result settles at around two weeks. On a one-week trip you will leave before it is finished.

Masseter Botox for jaw slimming is a different timescale entirely, and this is the single most important thing to understand before booking it as a visitor. It works by letting an over-developed chewing muscle shrink from disuse, and muscle takes weeks to months to reduce. You will feel chewing become less powerful within a couple of weeks; you will see the shape change much later.

So: do not book masseter Botox expecting to see a slimmer jaw before your flight home. Any clinic that implies otherwise is overselling it. There is more detail on Masseter Botox in Tokyo, including what happens as it wears off.

A note on what is and is not approved here

Japan approves botulinum toxin for a defined list of uses. Several popular aesthetic uses — masseter, temples, salivary glands, underarm sweating, and the products used for some of them — fall outside those approvals and are provided as self-pay, off-label care. That is normal practice, but you are entitled to know it, and it means Japan’s national relief system for adverse drug reactions does not apply. The details, product by product, are on our Botox page.

Risks, briefly and honestly

Common and short-lived: injection-site marks, bruising, mild headache, temporary tenderness.

Less common but worth knowing: asymmetry, a heavy-feeling brow, or a drooping eyelid if the product affects a neighbouring muscle. These are temporary — they wear off as the treatment does — but “temporary” can mean weeks. Botox is not permanent, which cuts both ways: a result you dislike also fades.

Not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular disorder, an infection at the injection site, or a known allergy to the product. Tell the doctor about every medicine you take.

FAQ

Can I get Botox on the same day I ask?

Often yes, subject to availability. Message us in English before you come and we will tell you what is open. Same-day treatment after the consultation is normal for Botox.

Can I go to an onsen afterwards?

Not the same day. Heat and full-body immersion are exactly what you are avoiding in the first hours. The next day is fine. If your itinerary has a hot-spring day, book the Botox for a different one.

Can I drink alcohol that evening?

Better not to. Alcohol widens blood vessels and makes bruising more likely on the evening it matters most. One evening is a small price for a cleaner result.

Is the consultation in English?

The doctor’s consultation is interpreted. An English interpreter on our staff joins when available; when not, we use a voice-translation tool. We say that plainly rather than advertising an English-speaking doctor, because we would rather you knew what to expect.

How long does it last, and can I top up at home?

Facial Botox commonly lasts three to four months; masseter treatment is usually spaced further apart. Yes, you can continue with a clinic at home — tell them the product and the units used, which we will give you.
